UNAIDS provides its practical support through the United Nations Theme Group on HIV/AIDS, the joint HIV/AIDS policy and strategy decision-making body of cosponsors and other UN agencies. The purpose of the UN Theme Group is to harmonize and co-ordinate the collective efforts of the UN system in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Rwanda. UNAIDS support to the government is focussed on three goals namely:
setting directions and following up targets with regard to the Declaration of Commitment, which was adopted at the United Nations General Assembly Session on HIV/AIDS, UNGASS, in June 2001.
building stronger commitment and partnerships involving networks of people living with HIV/AIDS, religious leaders, NGOs, the private & public sectors to promote a sense of urgency among the public and assisting them in implementing action plans to tackle the epidemic. The UN Theme Group has also played a key role in promoting and enhancing coordination of international assistance by providing a forum where the government, civil society and bilateral partners dialogue and interact.
identifying and analysing sound strategies “best practices” for preventing new infections, providing care to those affected, or alleviating the epidemics impact.
