UNFPA

Mission Statement:
UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, works to ensure that every child is wanted, every pregnancy is healthy, every young person is HIV-free, every girl and woman is respected, and every family has a strong and stable future.

Our Programmes:
In Rwanda, UNFPA subscribes to the goals of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) by supporting the Government in its promotion of reconciliation and reduction of poverty. Support at decentralised levels is focussed in the provinces of Cyangugu, Kibuye and Umutara.

  • As the world’s largest organisation in the domain of population and development, UNFPA’s support to reproductive health and population programmes contribute to poverty reduction by aiming at five distinctive development objectives:

  • Reduction of disease and mortality that are due to reproductive conditions such as pregnancy and child birth, infertility and infections transmitted through unsafe sexual and reproductive practices; thus contributing to healthier individuals and more productive households and communities. Reduction of unwanted pregnancies through family planning; thus allowing families to invest more in the health and education of each child.

  • Promotion of adolescent sexual health through access to accurate information on sexuality, postponing first intercourse, prevention of early pregnancy and recourse to unsafe abortion; thus contributing to lower population growth and healthier and better educated young people.

  • Promotion of women’s empowerment through improved access to resources and addressing social and cultural norms that are detrimental to their reproductive and sexual health; thus allowing girls and women to improve their quality of life and to fully participate in the Nation’s work force.

  • Strengthening of the national data analysis capacities for population policy implementation and mobilisation of communities for effective management of available resources; thus empowering the households to make optimal use of their human, natural, social and cultural resource base while taking into consideration the society’s demographic dynamics.
